Bagpipe Tuning & Maintenance

The tuning of pipe chanter reeds and the drones for all pipers in a pipe band is a time consuming tast for the lead piper. You can help speed up this process and avoid wasted time by adhering to the following guidelines.

    1. Keep your pipes properly maintained - seasoned, oiled, hemped, etc.
    2. Play your pipes every day at home to keep them working properly.
    3. Avoid moving your chanter reed between band practices.
    4. At band practices or before parades, play your pipes for 10 minutes to settle the reeds prior to having them fine tunes.
    5. When asked to, carefully remove your pipe chanter from the pipes, without disturbing or damaging the reed.
    6. Check your chanter against the electronic tuner, by blowing a steady "low A". the lead piper will oversee the correct seating of the reed in the chanter to achieve the correct pitch, and will confirm by matching the scale on your chanter to his.
    7. Replace your chanter carefully into the bagpipes.
    8. Form a line to have your drones fine tuned by the designated person.
    9. Do not play either your chanter or your drones while the other band members are being tuned up.
    10. Listen for, and obey promptly, and directions given by the band leaders.
